Solitaire - Carpenters
Solitaire was originally written and recorded by Neil Sedaka in 1972.
Andy Williams released the first #1 version of the song in 1973.
The Carpenters recorded their version in 1975 and though Richard thought it was Karen’s best vocal performance, she never actually liked the song. It quickly climbed to #1 on the Easy Listening charts, but Karen never changed her mind about the song.
Other notable versions were recorded by Clay Aiken, Tony Christie, Jann Arden, Shirley Bassey and Sheryl Crow. Johnny Mathis, Laura Branigan and even Elvis recorded versions of this song, where the card game “Solitaire” was a metaphor for a man who lost his love through his indifference.
The lyrics were written by Phil Cody, who’s recent divorce was their inspiration.
I’ve performed my own version and put my flavor on it. I hope you enjoy it!
